The Rolla Skate Club is set to open its doors at the Rollerland Building at the Pacific National Exhibition this December. It will mark the first time in 40 years that Vancouver has a full-time roller skating facility.

Some may think roller skating had its heyday in the last century. But others believe the pastime never lost its popularity, just getting a further boost during the pandemic. Jay Durant reports.

The pandemic has led to a roller skating revival. We join Krissy Van at Sunset Beach where she is joined local entrepreneurs who are working hard to keep up with demands.

I’m not the only one with this newfound obsession: like baking bread and adopting dogs, roller skating has experienced a COVID-related boost in popularity. In Vancouver, the evidence is everywhere: gliding along the seawall, practicing in parking lots, carving bowls in skate parks. [...] Carla Smith, co-founder of Rolla Skate Club, theorizes that it’s an effective outlet for pandemic pressure. “People need a release, they need something to charge their batteries. They want to get outside and learn new things,” she says.

The hottest fads of 2020 seemed to revolve around throwback trends and simple pleasures: going to the drive-in, taking up a new instrument, picnics in the park, baking, and walks around the neighbourhood to keep you from going insane. But no trend was quite as cool as taking up the ultra-retro, athletically-challenging pursuit of roller skating. Thousands of wobbly beginners took to their driveways and cul-de-sacs to take part in the sport, and we wanted to know why.

We talk to one of the co-founders of Rolla Skate Club, Lucy Croysdill (Lulu Demon, and learn all about how they are building a community of bad-ass women on wheels!

Whether you’ve picked up roller skating as a hobby during the pandemic or have loved it for years, now is the perfect time for practicing; the weather is getting warmer and rinks are even starting to open back up.
